To test the Gateway i've also built a smart device, an Ikea bulb that have a server in it that listen on the 8080 port for the gateway to send a message with the light status.
The hardest part was to figure out how to convert a bulb and not a socket to a "smart" socket, all the hardware has to go into a small bulb and work at high temps (65 to 80 °C) because that lamp get super hot.
I went using Edison as a main server for the API requests, and then send a post to the ESP8266 with the lamp status.
