Methodology / Approach
The Inn at the End of the World was developed in RPI's Game Development II class. In the class, students work in small teams over the course of one semester to create a full game. In its earliest stages, the project was conceived and pitched by a single member to the class, after which the Inn team was assembled. The Inn at the End of the World was designed with a focus on atmosphere and immersion from the very beginning. Inspired by the global isolation of the pandemic, we sought to create a game which would acknowledge and soothe that feeling of isolation. We kept the gameplay simplistic - yet focused on forming connections with other people - in order to emphasize the loneliness of the empty world beyond the home and hearth.
Technologies Used
We created the game in the Unity engine's 2D environment on Intel laptops. As we aimed for a hand-painted look, all art assets were painted in Photoshop and animated in Toon Boom Harmony.
