Overview / Usage
Neokaiju is a game all about causing destruction and gaining power as fast as you can. You control a small kaiju, trapped in a lab and used as a power source for the nearby city -- when you break out, your only goal is to save your friends and destroy the city. You must navigate through platforms and hostile enemies in order to gain the highest score and complete the objective. In addition, each saved kaiju acts as a power-up: your size and strength will increase every time you complete that part of a level until you become the ultimate monster. Neokaiju started development in March of 2020, and consists of a single replayable level. Much of the game's development was done remotely, across multiple fields of study.
Methodology / Approach
Our team had biweekly meetings to report progress and make crucial game decisions over the course of two semesters. The collaborators consisted of students from many of the university's disciplines, including computer science, animation, illustration, and music, both in the labs and remotely over Zoom and Slack. After we solidified the concept of the game and came up with design pillars to guide our work moving forward, we split into separate Art, Programming, UX, Sound, and Level Design teams, each reporting back to the core team of leads at meetings.
Neokaiju is an almost entirely student-led project.
